Used Caterpillar Generators for Sale: How to Buy a 3516 Safely

Finding used Caterpillar generators for sale is the easy part. The 3516 is one of the most traded large diesel sets in the world, and listings appear constantly. The hard part is the transaction: making sure the set is what it claims to be, that the seller can actually sell it, that its condition is proven before money moves, and that it arrives ready to run in a country that may use a different frequency and emissions rules.

This page follows a used 3516 from shortlist to first power, step by step. It assumes you have already read the listing; if not, start with our guide on how to read a Cat generator listing.

Why the 3516 Is Traded So Widely

The 3516 is the V16 flagship of the Caterpillar 3500 family, used for standby power at hospitals and data centers, prime power at mines and remote towns, and as a building block for multi-set power stations. Its wide installed base means parts, tooling and experienced technicians are available almost everywhere, which keeps resale demand strong. Versions range from older mechanically governed engines to electronic B, C and later builds with different ratings and emissions certification. Our 3516 specifications page sets out the main variants.

Plan the Total Scope, Not Just the Set

The generator is only part of the project. A 3516 needs a foundation or skid base, fuel supply and storage, cooling air or remote radiators, exhaust and silencing, switchgear and protection, controls and, where several sets run together, synchronising equipment. A used set bought without that scope in mind can sit waiting for parts of the plant that were never planned.

List the balance of plant items early, decide which come with the set and which must be sourced separately, and align delivery dates so the site is ready when the generator arrives. Ask whether the seller can supply original radiators, enclosures, control panels or spare parts kits, which are often easier to buy with the set than to find later.

Warning Signs in a Deal

  • Pressure to pay a large deposit before any inspection or test.
  • Serial numbers that cannot be checked or that differ between documents.
  • A set that is suddenly available at a different location from the one described.
  • Refusal to let an independent engineer witness tests.
  • Vague delivery terms or no clear point at which ownership passes.

Timing the Purchase

Good used 3516 sets often sell quickly, which creates pressure to commit before checks are complete. Prepare in advance so you can move fast without cutting corners: have your inspector lined up, a draft contract ready, your site requirements written down and your import rules checked. A buyer who can inspect and decide within days is in a far stronger position than one who starts the process only after finding a set.

If a set fails inspection, walking away is often cheaper than repairing it, provided you have another option in view. Keep a shortlist rather than relying on a single listing.

Step One: Verify the Seller and the Title

  • Confirm who owns the set and that the seller has the right to sell it, with documents linking the serial numbers to the owner.
  • Check for liens, finance agreements or leases that could give a third party a claim.
  • Confirm where the set physically is, and that you or your inspector can access it.
  • Be cautious of sellers who will not share serial numbers, refuse site visits or press for fast payment.
  • Keep all communication and agreed terms in writing.

Step Two: Prove the Condition

A used 3516 should be inspected by someone who works on these engines, and the key tests witnessed by you or your representative. At minimum that means a walkaround, oil and coolant sampling, a borescope of the cylinders, alternator insulation tests and a load bank test in steps up to full output, with readings recorded. Download the engine control module history where the engine has one.

Agree in advance what results are acceptable. A clear pass or fail standard avoids disputes later, and it gives both sides a fair basis for repairs or adjustment before shipping.

Step Three: Put the Deal in Writing

  1. Describe the set exactly: engine, generator and control serial numbers, arrangement number, rating type, voltage and frequency.
  2. Attach the inspection report and state that the set is sold in the condition inspected, with any agreed repairs listed.
  3. Link payment stages to milestones such as successful witnessed testing and release for shipment.
  4. State who packs, loads and insures the set, and when ownership and risk pass to the buyer.
  5. List the documents the seller provides: maintenance history, test records, manuals and drawings.
  6. Name the delivery terms clearly, using standard trade terms both sides understand.

Step Four: Match Frequency, Voltage and Rules

Many used 3516 sets come from 60 Hz markets and run at 1800 rpm. A 50 Hz country needs 1500 rpm operation, which usually means governor and control changes, alternator checks and a lower output rating. Converting in the other direction raises its own questions. Voltage also has to suit your network or be matched through a transformer.

Emissions rules differ between countries and sometimes between regions. Check that the engine’s certification, or lack of it, is acceptable where it will run, and whether exhaust treatment is required. Settle these questions before purchase, not after the set lands.

Step Five: Export, Shipping and Start-Up

Large gensets need export-standard preparation: fluids drained or managed to carrier rules, openings sealed, controls protected from moisture, and the set secured for sea or road travel. Our article on export packing for Cat gensets explains each step. Arrange customs documentation, import permits and any inspection certificates the destination requires.

On arrival, inspect for transit damage before signing for delivery, then follow a structured commissioning routine: fluid fill, insulation tests, protection settings, no-load run, load testing and handover with records.

Working as an independent supplier rather than for any engine maker, USP&E finds, verifies, refurbishes, exports and commissions used gensets. The company has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, and its quality and safety management is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 45001. Buying a used 3516: questions

How do I know a used Caterpillar generator seller is genuine?

Ask for serial numbers and ownership documents, check for liens or finance claims, confirm the set’s location, and insist on a site inspection before any payment.

Can a 60 Hz Cat 3516 be used in a 50 Hz country?

Often yes, by running it at 1500 rpm with governor and control changes and checking the alternator, but the output rating is usually lower and the work should be planned before purchase.

What documents should come with a used 3516 generator?

Ownership papers, maintenance and overhaul history, recent test and inspection records, operation manuals and wiring drawings, plus export and shipping documents where it crosses borders.

Should payment be linked to testing?

It is good practice to link payment stages to milestones such as a witnessed load test and release for shipment, so the condition is proven before most of the money moves.
