Cat 3516 Specifications: How to Read Them

You have found a 3516 set that looks right on paper. The listing quotes a power figure and a model number, and the price seems fair. But the 3516 has been built in many arrangements over the years, for different ratings, frequencies, fuels and emissions rules, and two sets with the same badge can behave very differently on your site.

Buy on the headline number alone and the risks are real: a standby-rated set asked to run prime duty and failing early, a 60 Hz unit that cannot serve a 50 Hz grid without major work, a cooling package that derates on a hot afternoon, or an emissions build that will not pass your permit. Each one means delay, extra cost or a set you cannot use.

Spec Checks From a Team That Installs the 3516

We know you want to buy with confidence, not decode a data sheet alone. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and Caterpillar 3500 series engines have been part of that work for many years. We work as an independent EPC, service and supply contractor. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

This guide does not list one set of numbers, because the right numbers depend on the exact arrangement. Instead it shows you which specifications to check and how to confirm them for the set in front of you.

Start With the Serial and Arrangement Numbers

Every 3516 carries an engine serial number and an arrangement number. Together they tell you how the engine was built: the rating, the fuel system, the turbocharging, the aftercooling and the emissions build. Caterpillar’s factory data for that arrangement is the only reliable source for output, fuel use and limits.

Ask the seller for clear photos of the engine plate, the alternator plate and the generator set plate. If the plates are missing or painted over, treat every number in the listing with caution. A reputable seller will share the factory data sheet or help you obtain it.

This matters because the 3516 family spans a wide range. A unit built for continuous duty on a gas field is not the same machine as one built for hospital standby, even though both are called a 3516.

Rating Type Matters More Than the Headline kW

Generator ratings come in types. A standby rating is for sets that run only when the grid fails, for limited hours each year. A prime rating covers sets that are the main source of power with a load that varies. A continuous rating is for steady full load with no time limit. The same engine carries a lower figure as the duty gets harder.

So when a listing quotes a single number, ask which rating it is. If your site needs prime or continuous power and the figure is a standby rating, the set you need may actually be a size larger. Match the rating type to your duty before you compare prices.

Check the alternator too. Its rating, voltage and winding must suit your load and grid. If you run motors or non-linear loads, the alternator and voltage regulator matter as much as the engine.

Frequency, Emissions and Site Conditions

A 3516 built for 60 Hz runs at a different speed from a 50 Hz set, and its alternator is wound for that frequency. Converting is possible in some cases but is a project, not a setting. Confirm the frequency and voltage against your grid first.

Emissions builds vary by region and year. If your permit sets limits, check that the engine’s build and any after-treatment meet them. Then look at cooling. Radiators are sized for a given ambient temperature and altitude, and output drops when conditions exceed them. Ask for the derated output at your site, not the sea-level figure.

If you run 3516 units already, the 3500 series service guide explains the maintenance routines that keep those specifications true over time.

If a 3516 Is Not the Right Answer

Sometimes the spec check shows that your load has outgrown a bank of diesel sets. For larger, steadier demand we also supply natural gas engines/stations, used/new gas turbines and a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, and the same engineers who size gas turbine generators can compare them fairly with a diesel fleet.

Data centre projects follow their own path, with hyperscale EPC/O&M, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, including the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. If diesel remains the best fit, see the 3516 and other sets in stock and send us the arrangement you need.

USP&E Teams Behind Your Cat-Class Power Site

Remote sites need people who know frontier work. USP&E runs your Cat-class fuel train upgrade from Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision for projects far from the nearest service shop.

Further back in the chain, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles financing and contract structure for Cat-class gensets, fuel skids and gas turbine packages; Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) secure US equipment, parts and engineering support; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.

For 3516 spec checks, Knoxville and Colorado Springs engineers review data for US buyers, Johannesburg and Cape Town cover African sites, and London handles contracts and export paperwork. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That team has carried 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

How to Check the Specifications of a 3516 Set

Your 3-step plan: 1. Send the plates, photos and listing you are looking at. 2. Get a plain report on rating, frequency, emissions and derating. 3. Buy, ship, install and commission the set with one team.

  1. Record the engine serial number and arrangement number.
  2. Confirm the rating type: standby, prime or continuous.
  3. Check frequency, speed and alternator voltage.
  4. Read the emissions build and the fuel system type.
  5. Compare cooling and site derating with your conditions.
  6. Ask for the factory data sheet for that exact arrangement.

FAQ: Cat 3516 Specifications: How to Read Them

What are the main Cat 3516 specifications to check?

USP&E checks the arrangement number, rating type, output at that rating, frequency and speed, alternator voltage, fuel system, emissions build and cooling design. Together these decide whether a particular 3516 suits your duty, grid and site conditions, which a single headline power figure cannot tell you.

Why do 3516 power figures differ between listings?

USP&E sees different figures because the 3516 was built in many arrangements and each carries standby, prime and continuous ratings. Frequency, turbocharging, aftercooling and emissions build also change output. Always confirm the figure against factory data for the exact arrangement number.

How do I confirm 3516 horsepower for a specific engine?

USP&E confirms horsepower from the engine serial and arrangement numbers, matched to Caterpillar’s factory data for that build. Photos of the engine plate let an engineer check the arrangement, so you know the real output at your rating type before you commit to buying the set.

Can a 60 Hz 3516 run on a 50 Hz grid?

USP&E treats a frequency change as a project rather than a setting. The engine speed, governor and alternator must all suit 50 Hz, and output changes too. In some cases conversion is practical, but buying a set already built for your frequency is usually simpler.

Which USP&E offices help with Cat 3516 purchases?

USP&E supports US 3516 buyers from Knoxville and Colorado Springs and African sites from Johannesburg and Cape Town. London handles contracts and export paperwork, and Wuxi supports parts and equipment sourced in China, so checks and logistics are covered wherever your set is going.

What 3516 projects has USP&E delivered?

USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries. Public case studies include a backup power station of low-hour Cat 3516B gensets with new switchgear for a gold mine in North-West Africa, supplied and installed on time and on budget.

Is USP&E a broker for Cat 3516 sets?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is an independent EPC, service and supply contractor whose engineers inspect, install and maintain Caterpillar sets. When we check a 3516 specification, the same team can stand behind the installation and service, so the advice is tied to real results.

How fast can USP&E check a 3516 listing for me?

USP&E can review plate photos, the listing and your site details as soon as you share them. Engineers flag any mismatch in rating type, frequency, emissions or derating first, so you know quickly whether the set fits before money changes hands.
